After more than two decades away from the stage, Syracuse’s own Beta Minus Mechanic is reuniting for a special one-night-only show on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Funk ‘n Waffles in downtown Syracuse. The female-fronted 90s emo/post-hardcore outfit will be joined by local acts Paper Rabbit and Joshua for what promises to be an emotional homecoming for fans of melodic, heartfelt underground rock.
Roots in the Syracuse Scene
Beta Minus Mechanic formed in Syracuse, New York, during the mid-1990s, emerging from a tight-knit local hardcore and alternative music community. The band quickly became known for their dynamic live performances, sharing bills with regional acts and appearing at notable events like the Syracuse 3-Day Super Festival in 1997 and shows at venues such as Styleen’s Rhythm Palace.
Deeply connected to Syracuse’s vegan straight-edge (sXe) hardcore scene, the group stood out with a more melodic, pop-leaning approach. They blended post-hardcore energy, alternative rock accessibility, and subtle Midwest emo influences, delivering upbeat yet emotionally charged songs anchored by heavy riffs and strong melodies.
The core lineup featured vocalist Ina Jeffress, who helped define their female-fronted identity, along with Erick Edwards (who also played in Earth Crisis, linking the band to the heavier side of the local scene), Jason DeRose, Pete Spielman, and Tony Tornabene. Tragically, Pete Spielman passed away in 2016. For the reunion, Ian Edwards will be filling in on his part.
Active primarily through the late 1990s (and possibly into the early 2000s), Beta Minus Mechanic released material on Crisis Records, a Revelation Records subsidiary that often spotlighted female-fronted bands. They built a dedicated following in the underground before going on hiatus around the turn of the millennium. Their music has continued to resonate with fans through live recordings, fan-compiled collections, and scene retrospectives.
The Reunion Show
This July 18 performance at Funk ‘n Waffles (doors at 7 PM, show at 8 PM, 18+) marks a rare chance to hear the band again in their hometown. Supporting acts round out a strong bill:
- Paper Rabbit: Melody-driven indie pop featuring Syracuse veterans like Erik Henning (Polar Bear Club).
- Joshua: Post-hardcore/emo favorites known for their cult classic A Whole New Theory.

Syracuse Music Collective Interview: Tony Tornabene (Beta Minus Mechanic)
Syracuse Music Collective: Hey, this is Chris from Syracuse Music Collective, and I’m sitting here with Tony Tornabene.
Tony Tornabene: Correct.
Syracuse Music Collective: And he is in Beta Minus Mechanic. So Tony, can you kind of tell me a little about what’s been going on for the last, I don’t know, 30 years?
Tony Tornabene: Well, we all just kind of went our own ways. Ina lives in California, Jason lives up near Albany, and Eric lives down in North Carolina. Eric, as you know, is in Earth Crisis, so he’s been doing that for a long time. I think he got in the band around ’99 or somewhere around there.
I played in various bands over the years. Got married, had a family, got divorced — all that life stuff, you know.
Syracuse Music Collective: It’s been a little while since Beta Minus Mechanic has done anything. What brought you guys to the decision to bring it back?
Tony Tornabene: Eric and I have been toying around with this for the last few years. After Beta dissolved, Eric and I went on to play in a band called The Farthest Man. We initially tried to get that back together, but things didn’t pan out. Then we started talking about Beta again. One day I just texted him and said, “Let’s do it,” and he was like, “I’m down.” We got ahold of Ina and Jason, they got on board, and here we are.
Syracuse Music Collective: Is this the original lineup, or have there been any changes?
Tony Tornabene: It is the original lineup. Pete passed away about 10 years ago, so Ian — Eric’s brother — is going to play bass for the show.
Syracuse Music Collective: So he’s the new addition, just for this show?
Tony Tornabene: For the show, yes. We’re only looking that far ahead right now.
Syracuse Music Collective: Are there any more plans beyond this, or is this kind of a litmus test to see how it’s received?
Tony Tornabene: Yeah, we’re definitely going to see how this goes. We want to play the show first and then talk about future plans afterward. We have some songs that we wrote and performed back in the day that never got recorded, so we’ve been tossing around the idea of getting into the studio to record those. But nothing is definite yet.
Syracuse Music Collective: Are you nervous about the upcoming show at all?
Tony Tornabene: A little bit, yeah. Jason, Eric, and I have already gotten together and played a few times, but we haven’t played with Ina in 30 years. Ian’s new to it too, so we’re going to be rehearsing Thursday and Friday before the show to hash everything out as best we can.
Syracuse Music Collective: Is there anything else you want to add? Maybe a plug for the show?
Tony Tornabene: The show is Saturday, July 18 at Funk n Waffles in downtown Syracuse. Paper Rabbit — a great local band — is playing, and Joshua, who are from the Hudson Valley area. They were around back in the day too, not too long after Beta.
