Collective Soul and Live made a stop at the Darien Lake Amphitheatre on their co-headlining “Summer Unity Tour” on Saturday July 26 with special guests Our Lady of Peace and Greylin James Rue.
Opening the show was newcomer, Greylin James Rue. Greylin’s music can best be described as folk-rock storytelling with a hint of pop. She was admittedly nervous stating that, “this is my first tour.” She played a short set that included “It Gets Bad” and “Birth of Venus.” I am looking forward to seeing more from her in the future.

Up next were Canadian rock veterans Our Lady of Peace. It’s hard to believe that they have been around for over thirty years and are still going strong. Lead singer Raine Maida spoke about the importance of mental health in between songs. He was joined onstage by Duncan Coutts (bass), Steve Mazur (guitar) and Jason Pierce (drums). Together, they worked their way through a forty-minute set that included “Superman’s Dead,” “Whatever” and “Locked in the Trunk of a Car (The Tragically Hip cover).” A solid performance by Our Lady of Peace.

It was time for co-headliners, Collective Soul. The lead singer, Ed Roland, took the stage to a rousing applause from the crowd. After a quick hello to the fans, the band started right in with “Mother’s Love.” Roland does a fantastic job connecting with the audience, engaging them with stories between songs. He was joined onstage by his brother, Dean Roland (guitar), Will Turpin (bass), Jesse Triplett (lead guitar), and Johnny Rabb (drums). Together they sounded incredible. They played a great mix of songs from their vast catalog including, “Shine,” “The World I Know,” “Where the River Flows” and ending their set with “Run.” Collective Soul always puts on a good live show and this one was no exception.

It was time for the last band of the evening, Live. I have seen Live many times and singer Ed Kowalczyk always puts on a good show. Most of the songs they performed were off their 1994 album, Throwing Copper. Songs from this album always receive an enthusiastic response from the crowd. Kowalczyk’s voice hasn’t faltered over the years. He can still deliver those songs with the same intensity and emotion as when they first came out. In addition to fan favorites like “I Alone,” “Iris” and “Lightning Crashes,” Live debuted a new song called, “Leave the Radio On” that was well received by their fans.
