Photos and Review by Chris Besaw
This past Friday evening in one of the most “American” cities, Buffalo, New York, the legendary female punk, and thrash band, L7 made a stop at the Electric City concert venue bringing along with them, Gina Volpe, and her band.
Leading off the evening was Gina Volpe and her current touring band. If the name Gina Volpe sounds familiar it’s because she is also in another incredible punk band that you may have heard of, the Lunachicks! Gina and company started the evening off with the heavy, pounding track “Time to Come.”

It didn’t take long for the fans to get moving and jumping around. Gina Volpe is out on tour supporting her current solo release Delete the World and sadly Buffalo is the last stop on her tour with L7.

Aside from that, Gina and her backing band played an incredible ten song set that mostly focused on her latest release with some other tracks mixed in. I really enjoyed “Drink Me,” “Different Animal” and the intense and hard hitting “Escape from the Lab.” Although this is the last stop on their tour, I’m certain Gina and company won’t be slowing down anytime soon and when they do tour again make sure you get out there and support this amazing artist!

Next up were the formidable female punk and thrash legends from Los Angeles, L7! You could feel the excitement building up in the venue as the fans were getting eager for the band to start. The lights went dark leaving a rolling smoke flowing off the stage and billowing through the crowd. Only a few purple lights highlighted the amps and drum kit. One by one, Donita, Demetra, Suzy, and Jennifer came out on the stage, and then like a shot going off the ladies wasted no time kicking things off with the low and heavy track “Deathwish.”

The crowd was feeling it, heads banging and moving around with a lot of energy. L7 kept the energy up by ripping right into their classic hit “Andres.” I have said this before and I will say it again, I enjoy seeing L7 live because they always put on such an intense, energetic performance. L7 are no strangers to the music scene, they have been touring and recording for nearly forty years.

Donita, Demetra, Suzy, and Jennifer played an impressive 21 song set list with songs spanning their career including great tracks from some of their best albums such as Smell the Magic, Bricks are Heavy, Hungry for Stink and even their most current release Scatter the Rats. Some tracks that were just plain incredible live, in my opinion, were “Everglade,” “Shove,” “Wargasm” and “Monster” to which Donita quipped “that if any of them had kids they would definitely refer to them as monsters.” After a nearly two-hour set, L7 hit the stage for one last time belting out “Scatter the Rats” and a song Donita dubbed a song for all you “bad ass women out there ““Fast and Frightening.”

After the final notes were left humming from the stacks of amps the band said their farewells and humbly thanked the audience for supporting them all these years. Thank you yet again for another amazing show. Please enjoy my photo highlights from the show!
