Opeth with Special Guest Tribulation at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto. 10/14/24 – Sold Out Show!!!

On a holiday long weekend the progressive metal band from Sweden Opeth delivered a majestic performance at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with a Sold Out Show in Toronto with special guest Tribulation.

It was a pretty chilly Monday night in Toronto on the eve of the end of the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday that many hardcore Opeth & Tribulation fans gather to enjoy their favourite Prog death metal bands from Sweden and literally we have the Vikings taking over North America with full force!

Starting the night we had the Swedish heavy metal band from Arvika Tribulation the quartet delivered an awesome gig and based their set primarily from their soon to be released in November new album “Sub Rosa in Æternum” a follow-up to 2021’s “Where The Gloom Becomes Sound” the band played songs like “Hungry Waters”, “Saturn Coming Down” and “Tainted Skies”, and a variety songs from their previous albums “The Children of the Night”,
“Down Below”, and “The Formulas of Death” lead by Johannes Andersson – (bass, and vocals) him and the rest of  the band  were dressed in all black with his face painted in white that emulate parts of psychological horror of Italian cinema, and parts of gaunt British goth.

This is not the first time me seeing live this band live. Tribulation continues working hard delivering their Gothic and Metal Black metal to the audiences and did not disappoint the Canadian crowd. Although the band has had some changes Johannes Andersson, and Adam Zaars founding members keep their intact their style  and essence with help from Joseph Tholl, and Oscar Leander two great additions on the current lineup. They all sounded great in addition to their stage performance.

Tribulation is Johannes Andersson – Bass, and Vocals, Adam Zaars – Guitars, Joseph Tholl – Guitars, and Oscar Leander – Drums.

Tribulation Setlist:

  • Tainted Skies
  • Nightbound
  • Suspiria de profundis
  • Hungry Waters
  • Saturn Coming Down
  • Strange Gateways Beckon
  • Melancholia

It was time for the main act of the night and all of us were so anxious for Opeth to take the stage and start their show, and rright at 9:15 the band emerged from backstage starting Martín Méndez on Bass, and Fredrik Åkesson in guitarist, followed by drummer, Waltteri Väyrynen, and taking his position behind keyboards Joakim Svalberg followed by guitarist and Mikael Åkerfeldt and that’s when everyone was already going nuts and ready for a treat!

Opeth started their set with a brand new song P1 (§1), followed by “The Leper Affinity” from Blackwater Park album, and “The Devil’s Orchard” , and “Eternal Rains Will Come” anc continued with a variety of many other songs from their previous released albums which had the entire crowd wow with their stage performance and how synchronized with the lights and jumbo screens on the stage that showed many different types of scenes that were part of the songs in their setlist!

The audience was really engaged with Opeth from the beginning to the end just like their last visit to Toronto back in 2022 at the same venue, and kept us all enjoying every minute. Let me tell you that I was very impressed by their new songs that it is going to be a no brainer for me to snag a copy right after it comes available.

Mikael’s showed off his particular voice that went from very soft and melodic to deep growled at times and it will be very challenge for any that would try to mimic it. In the same way the rest of the band had their very own way to show off their talents for example Joakim Svalberg delivered backing vocals and very playful (at times) his sounds behind keyboards, while Fredrik Åkesson with other backing vocals and amazing riffs with this guitar going side by side with Mikael. Martín Méndez and his Bass was flawless sounding and even looked so easy to master but only he has that perfected with all those years of experience he has on his belt.

Opeth and Tribulation just started their North American Tour and had a Sold Out show here in Toronto and Low Ticket count in some other cities going until the end of October, and continuing in Europe in 2025. So please do me a favour and go out and see these amazing bands live. You will not be disappointed.
