Crystal Garden featuring Boyd Tinsley of Dave Matthews Band played a sold-out show at Funk N’ Waffles in Syracuse, NY on Monday April 3.
Crystal Garden, produced by Boyd Tinsley, is a modern-day rock group made up of Mycle Wasman (vocals), Charlie Csontos (bass), Matt Frewen (drums). The band is on tour in support of their recently released debut album Let The Rocks Cry Out. When asked how the band formed, Tinsley responded, “I wanted to bring together a band that had talent. There are a lot of talented musicians out there especially up in Canada. I came across Mycle and was like, there he is, that’s my singer.” Tinsley certainly met his goal. Crystal Garden is a talented group of musicians. Wasman has a smooth, soothing voice and a fun, laid back yet commanding stage presence. Charlie Csontos laid down consistent bass lines with a charming smile on his face the entire time. Matt Frewen pounded away on his small but ample drum kit with ease and precision. Tinsley joined the band for the first three songs adding his fine-tuned reverberations from his electric violin. Boyd rejoined the band at the end of the evening for the final three songs.
Fan favorites included: “Wake the Funk Up,” “Devil Woman,” a very funky cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and the band ended the evening with the title track from Boyd Tinsley’s 2003 solo album True Reflections. If you missed the Syracuse show, the band will be making at a stop at the Bug Jar in Rochester on April 15.
Syracuse Music Collective was fortunate enough to catch up with Boyd Tinsley and drummer Matt Frewen to talk about the project, life on the road and words of wisdom.
